Founder's Perspective: Making European Startups Competitive

By Tommy van Schaik

Simplifying compliance to strengthen European innovation.
I've always held a deep curiosity about Europe's startup ecosystem. Despite my interest, I had not directly participated in any startups directly as my path was always in the government / Defense sector.
Recently, I came to the conclusion that the survival of both the EU and NATO are heavily dependent on innovation — and we all know what ecosystem provides that.
The Problem
One issue continually drew my attention: European startups struggling under regulatory burdens that hinder competitiveness, which is bad for Europe and the alliance.
Politicians frequently promise "simplification," yet this rarely translates into tangible outcomes. Take the EU AI Act: over 900 pages of dense regulation, with explainer documents adding hundreds more.
For innovative startups, this regulatory complexity becomes a substantial roadblock, diverting critical resources from innovation and growth.
The Solution
Recognizing this pressing issue inspired me to launch Smart Compliance Hub. Our goal is clear: to capture, inform, streamline, and explain all information regarding the EU AI Compliance Act for startups.
My hope is that we can build a community that speaks with one voice to our policy makers so they can make the right decisions that support and excel innovation, instead of slowing it down.
Here's how we're making that happen:
- Straightforward Compliance: Turning overwhelming regulatory content into manageable, actionable tasks.
- Continuous Adaptation: Automated updates keep startups aligned with regulations effortlessly.
- Clarity and Simplicity: Ensuring that compliance language is clear, approachable, and practical.
Let's simplify compliance and strengthen European innovation together.
